Spending a full first day in Paris walking around was really good to defeat jet lag. I was not so good on my energy levels, so the second day I decided to take it a little easier. I got the hotel breakfast, which was a few ordinary rolls and an extraordinary croissant and pain au chocolate. I so love “pain au chocolate” that it’s silly. (It’s a flakey pastry with two lines of chocolate that run through it. It’s delicious. It’s better than cake.)
After breakfast, I walked up the hill to Sacre-Coeur. Sacre-Coeur is a beautiful church on the top of the Montmartre. It’s about five minutes from where I’m staying (Le Relais Montmartre) and is one of a few landmarks that you can see from many parts of the city. The church is amazing and the view is equally stunning. From the steps of the church, you can look out over the entire city.
The rest of the day, I spent in a cafe writing down what had happened so far and watching people go past the window. Once evening approached, I got onto the Metro and got some dinner near the Sorbonne. It was too dark to take pictures, but I did see some of the Latin Quarter which is adjacent/around the Sorbonne…this included a church from the Middle Ages that was built on an ancient Roman bath (and that I can’t find on the map at the moment).
At that point, I made my way back to the hotel and collapsed…and slept for an amazing twelve hours. Far longer than I expected but my basic trip measurements say that I’m walking more than the eight miles I’d been doing on weekends at home. That’s true, even though I’m taking the Metro everyplace!

Pain au chocolate? I’ll leave that alone.
