Birthday? Yep!

It’s my birthday.

I’ve got stuff to do that doesn’t involve typing up a new post. Then the widow of my friend Dave posted a list of rules he had written about life to the blog she’s been keeping since he got sick. Her post was simple:

I found this list on his workbench…

  • What you resist persists
  • Don’t be a football to other people’s opinions
  • Expectations reduce the joy of life
  • Don’t take a position. It reduces your options.
  • Positive and negative are complementary
  • Don’t see intention in other people’s mistakes
  • Responsibility is power/growth
  • Random acts of kindness increase the joy in the world
  • Don’t pour water on other people’s enthusiasm
  • The present moment is inevitable

If a birthday is a good day to consider all the things that have happened in the last year and look at the year ahead, then this list is strangely coincidental. How would I live my life if I used any or all of these rules in it?

I wish I would have had a chance to talk to Dave about it, too, as I’d like to know why he picked this set of things to write down.
